Dominant cultures attempt to subordinate other existing cultures by performing various kinds of "erasure" on them. The most serious of them is genocide, in which most or all members of a group are actively killed or so excluded from the possibility of pursuing a viable livelihood that they tend to die. Other forms of erasure include assimilation into the dominant group when that is allowed, or "passing" when that is possible. Cooptation is another, involving the taking of elements of a subordinated culture and moving them into dominate culture so that they are "mainstreamed" and become accepted. The problem in all of these acts of erasure is that the dominate culture never has to learn anything about the subordinate culture and that the subordinate culture is burdened to death or so marginalized that its value essentially vanishes. The humanity of its members is precluded by these erasures, so that wherever they are visible they seem "out of place" even when they were here first or when they have been here as long as people from the dominate culture. They are invalidated along with their cultures. In fact, the ignorance of members of dominate culture is well-known (because they are the dominate culture, they don''t have to learn Spanish, for example, or know about black history). In their ignorance, members of dominate culture see themselves as "innocent" and contribute further to difficulties already put into place by history for members of subordinate cultures. The two movies listed above are unusual in that they deal explicitly with the issues of dominate/subordinate cultural relationships. In each of these stories a person from dominate culture (Earl in "A Family Thing" and Alfred Kroeber in "The Last of His Tribe") is challenged by the subordinate culture and/or its representative (Aunt T and Ray; and Ishi) to return its recognition. All this amounts to, really, is treating the subordinate culture and the persons associated with it with equality. But that is precisely what is unbelievably hard for the person identified with dominate culture--he or she comes face to face with his/her prejudice, privilege and ignorance. If that is not unpleasant enough, he or she then has to make a choice, face that having a choice involves power the subordinated other does not have, and face the consequences of both--to run away and live half or fully aware of denying another human being''s and culture''s humanity and live with the guilt--or embrace the challenge and the uphill learning experience of setting privilege aside and becoming as a child, vulnerable on the terms of a new culture and learning new values and ways of seeing the world from within that new perspective. Kroeber and Earl are both challenged by the subordinate cultures they are visit or are visited by, and both make choices about where they want to be vis a vis the culture in question.
