• Problem Statement with Literature Review (Assignment II)-Attract attentions from readers with research problem(s) and evidence. Follow the format you see in journal articles, telling readers why they should be interested in your research question. This should be about 3 pages with single space. Please also use at least 10 citations* (Please do not use all ten citations from newspaper or magazine sources; you must use at least 5 scientific research articles). This section should not be a long sermon on your personal feelings about the issue. Rather, it should be a brief statement establishing that there is a field of research in this area, thus, it is important, OR that this topic affects economic crime management and criminal justice system at some level, and should be researched. *Note: bibliography is a list of sources you used to prepare (read) your research while citation/reference is a list of sources you cited in your research paper. In the first page of your problem statement, you must convince me that you have discovered a research problem worth my consideration. If I am wondering with a question, “What is it this student wants to talk about?” you eventually fail to attract attention from me. You will state some conditions of incomplete knowledge or flawed understanding on your research questions (ignorance and misunderstanding-please see literature review). You will also state about benefits out of your research. Or you can state the possible cost and consequences if the problems are unresolved. What you need to do after successful problem statement, you need to situate research problems in the literature (Often it is called literature review-most journal articles combine problem statement and literature review. However, thesis or professional project should separate them. For the learning purpose, we separate them in this course). What it means you reexamine existing literatures on your research questions and synthesize (reorganize) them into your research questions. In the review, you present them as a series of issues relating your research questions rather than a series of summaries of articles. If you glance through articles in Criminology and other journals in the field, you will find that the literature reviews are very smooth, and very topic oriented. In fact, one sentence may cite several sources!
