The module guide is really unhelpful. the description of this piece is ''An individual critical reflection on observations of curriculum leadership.'' the assessment criteria (if you can call it that ) is An in depth critical evaluation of leadership and management and relationships between policy documents and practice. The essay has to be 1500 words. my mentor at school (who i was meant to follow and observe) is the geography co-ordinator/leader. I asked her a few questions in an email : What does your role involve and how to you implement things? Being aware of the geography topics taught through the school, ensuring that resources are up to date and easy to access. Creating an action plan each year for geography. Providing a point of contact for resources and advice on geography for new members of staff. Do you think it''s a good idea to have a teachers as co-ordinators of different subjects? Yes. What is expected of you as a leader? To provide advice and support for new members of staff and those changing year groups in geography. To ensure that geography is taught effectively throughout the year groups ensuring progression and coverage of key skills. What barriers to you face? Time is really the only barrier – it would be good to have more time to devote to the role. If you could change things - (policy or practice) what would you do? Things are changing rapidly with the new key skills theme based curriculum and the school is in the process of moving over to a skills based curriculum. I think this will involve evaluating the current plans to ensure that key skills are covered across the year groups. She will send me the school geography policy within the next few days. The intro should briefly suggest what should be in schools (policies etc.) The main section of the essay should discuss the role of a ''subject leader'', and does my mentor fit into this role. what is her style/role. does she meet standards.
