Discerning the credibility of health information sources can be difficult due to the constant change in available information because of new research and the varying treatment protocols for a particular condition. Using guides can asses the credibility and accuracy of the information however; the validity cannot be determined by a simple, standard rule (Evaluating Health Information, 2002-2008). When considering the credibility of a source people need to ask is the source fair, objective, and lacking a hidden agenda. People also need to scrutinize the qualifications of the source and determine if the source has the expertise needed to provide the information. There are things that can add to the reliability of a source such as having the publisher’s or author’s contact information listed in the form of a mailing address or their phone number and if the publication has undergone peer review by a panel of professionals in the field of medicine being discussed in the article (Evaluating Health Information, 2002-2008). In order for a source to be reliable, the information provided by the source must be accurate. Therefore, when assessing the credibility of a source the accuracy of the information must be assessed. This can be done by discerning if the information is supported by evidence from scientific studies or expert opinion. If the information is supported by a study then study also needs to be scrutinized and consideration needs to be given to the size of the study, any limitations or weaknesses of the study, and if the study was a randomized controlled study (Evaluating Health Information, 2002-2008). There are things a person should look for that should make them skeptical of the information such as unidentifiable publisher and author however, if the information is supported by another source the criteria for credibility then the information should be considered. Notice should be taken of the date of the publication. If the publication is outdated then it is more than likely not a credible source as there is much advancement made in medicine from day-to-day. If the information makes claims such as “secret cure” or “miraculous result” it should not be considered reliable (Evaluating Health Information, 2002-2008).
