Using Henry Sayre’s, Writing About Art, will be of great help in organizing your thoughts and determining what to write. Your analysis and comparison should cover the following points: 1. Artists and his background-the period style he or she is in (birth/death date of the artist, if applicable). 2. Subject (title), period and date of the work (if applicable), size, and medium. Discuss briefly the story that the subject represents. 3. Composition. Consider how the composition illustrates the subject. Before comparing, assume that your reader does not know the paintings, start by giving a clear description of each painting respectively. 4. Form and space, color and light. 5. Discuss how each work is characteristic of the period and the individual style it represents, and how the two works differ in their total effect. 6. Footnotes: You must use at least 2 sources, and create 2 foot (or end) notes • The footnotes may be quotes or paraphrases of your sources. • In any case, you should document your case. • You may also use these notes to carry on a dialogue on matters not directly related to the subject of comparison (spelling of a name, where someone worked, etc.) You may include footnotes at “foot” – bottom – of pages or as “end” notes at end of paper, but not parenthetical notes. 7.
