On the TV show & quot;Sex and the City & quot; there are 4 main female characters. Each of the 4 characters are friends with each other in very specific ways. Though there has been lots of academic research regarding the shows implications of feminism, stereotypes, and so forth, my study aims to look at the most important factor of the show: its friendships. Using 16 different examples from the show itself (one for each character and their friendship one on one with each of the other characters), I will be able to perform a content analysis and show how the power of friendships affect each individual character. “Sex and the City” takes four completely different women who happen to be best friends, and deals specifically with women in the late 20th century into the early 21st century, and how changing roles and definitions of who a women should be and its effects on each of the characters. Because of this, it’s important to really look at the show as a whole as well as each individual character and see why the audience finds the series so appealing. First of all it’s important to note that this show has created a bit of controversy. The series’ four main characters are prominent females in high level jobs (a journalist with her own column, an attorney who eventually becomes partner at her firm, one who manages an art gallery and a PR agent). There is also a misogynistic element saying that women in roles such as these should not be friends. As a result, this series breaks the traditional narratives of sexual and powerful women within society. For this paper, I will only require chapter one (an introduction/statement of hypothesis) which includes a context analysis (everything outside of the artifact in question including the history of the show, information and history of the creator and director of the show, information about the 4 main actresses, and what it aired against when it was on the air.) I also need a literature review (chapter 2) that is 2/3 about the academic research already on the show (feminism, stereotypes, etc), and about 1/3 on how the friendship angle will be something new to study about the show (include any sources and academic research about friendship on the show). The lit. review should include some history about what was going on in popular culture and the media when the show first starting airing and throughout its tenure.
