& quot;Much research has suggested that predicting whether a child will be a success or failure through testing or teachers'' judgments, and labeling him or she as bright or slow can actually make that child a success or failure. Such predictions and labeling can effect an individual''s view of him-/her-self or their self esteem - and the individual may act in accordance with the prediction made and the label attached. This process of predicting something will happen, and of pupils acting in the way teachers expect them to act in accordance with the label they have been given is known as the self-fulfilling prophecy & quot; & quot;most schools generally place a high value on things such as hard work, good behavior, and exams success. One of the effects of streaming and labeling is to divide pupils into those in the top streams who more or less conform to these aims and therefore achieve high status, and those in the bottom streams who are labelled as failures by the school and are therefore deprived of status. in response to this, bottom-stream pupils often rebel against the school and develop an alternative set of values, attitudes, and behaviour in opposition to the aims of the school; this also known as anti-school sub-culture.
