Be sure to include your own description of the works. Basically this assignment is based from an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art where we had to choose a room from the "New Galleries for 19th & early 20th century European Paintings and Sculpture". (LITERATURE AVAILABLE ONLINE AT THE MET''S WEBSITE - www.metmuseum.org) I chose the "room" called "European Vision of North Africa" located in the "Kenneth Jay Lane Gallery"-which i just refer to as the "orientalism room" The professor wants us to make an assumption/generalize what the curator is trying to show/say (thesis). Basically that room deals w/ the works from Orientalism so that would be the theme. Then take 3 works (listed above) w/ a similar theme (orientalism) and research them and write about how those works exemplify (or debunk) the curatorial thrust. Be sure to also include a description of the works. The analysis should include an evaluation of the exhibition display and how it enhances (or detracts) from the curatorial thesis. (If you happen to come across any other works that are DEFINITELY displayed in the "Oriental gallery" at the museum discussed above, that would be easier/better to use, you may do so. **BUT IT HAS TO BE ON DISPLAY THERE) Perhaps the introduction (before getting into the thesis of Orientalism) could be something brief about the "Henry J. Heinz II Galleries" which are the new galleries within the 19th/20th century exhibition. This information would be found on the MET''s website. BE CERTAIN TO CITE/FOOT/ENDNOTE EVERYTHING PROPERLY USING Henry Sayre''s "Writing About Art" OR "The Chicago Manual of Style" as the guide.
