Case Scenario: This morning, Tom appeared before the Magistrate court for an offence of assault occasioning Actual Bodily Harm (ABH). the victim was his partner Mary. Tom has been violent and abusive to her for several years. Tom has one previous conviction for assault (one year ago) and a conviction for drink driving (two years ago). His case was adjourned with Tom released on bail to live with his mother (witha bail condition not to contact Mary). A referral is made to your office. Mary lives with her two children, Tom (11 years old) and Chloe (7 years old). You visit the family. During the visit, Mary informs you that she is pregnant. Mary had thought about leaving Tom but was frightened he would not accept this. He had attempted to srangle her on two occasions when she ahd tried to leave him. Mary feels isolated. She rarely goes out of the house. Tom does not allow any of her friends to visit and recently Mary has become frightful of even contacting her own family. Mary says she is not coping well with the children who do not listen to her. During your visit, you notice that Tom bullies Chloe. Shouts at her and won''t allow her to touch his toys. Mary says to you "he is just like his father. When he is here no one is allowed to touch the remote control. He makes us watch what he wants to see on TV." You also notice that Tom interjected in the discussion and openly disagreed with Mary in a disrespectful manner. He answered each time that you asked Mary a specific question on parenting, and at one point, he insisted on sending Chloe upstairs saying she was disruptive. In your assignment you are expected to demonstrate: - your understanding of the approaches - What you identify as the similarities and differences between the approaches. - What you see as the advantages and / or disadvantageds of using each approach - showing awareness of what the approach can realistically allow you to address - understanding of anti-discriminatory practice issues.
