Understanding the importance of discretion is key to understanding the balancing of values in our society along with equality. TOPIC: Using the internet, your text, research the issue of the discretionary process regarding criminal procedure. Be sure to address the two types of decision-making: formal and informal decision-making. Also, think of each step in the criminal process from investigation to appeals from convictions as a decision point. Describe how the use of discretion may affect the outcome of a particular case. Students may use examples of how discretion by police, judges, prosecutors, etc. may affect the criminal process. Each web search paper will be two (2) pages (double-spaced) in length and in proper format (only APA style will be accepted). This paper should be submitted with a title page and reference list citing three (3) sources in addition to the text. The cover page and reference page will not be counted towards the minimum page requirement. The in-text citations must indicate the source of the material. If a source is not cited it could be grounds for plagiarism so caution must be exercised when using sources.
