Management Control Systems Term Research Paper Purpose: To provide the student with greater knowledge and awareness for the importance of management control systems within a business organization. A lapse in management controls can lead to financial and organization problems, whereas effective management controls can help an organization achieve its strategies and build a world-class operation. Was the corporation successful or not successful? Did the corporation grow financially or suffer setbacks? Did the corporation engage in good ethical or bad ethical behavior? Was your corporation a good citizen or a bad citizen? • Assessors: Describe how your corporation should have acted. Were Generally Accepted Accounting Standards, audit standards, standards of conduct, ethical standards, and law followed? Were internal controls in place and working? How were employees rewarded? • Effectors: What happened in your corporation when feedback occurred, either good or bad, from either internal or external controls? Did the feedback result in continued behavior, changed behavior, or cover-up of activities? • Communication Networks: Was formal and informal communication within your corporation open, friendly, constructive, and conducive to goal achieving? Or was formal and informal communication within your corporation secretive, suspicious, arbitrary, and self-serving? Was there goal congruency? • Management Strategies: As described in Corporate Annual Reports or the print media, what were your corporation’s 1-5 year strategies? Were they communicated, achievable, realistic, and understood? Or were they nebulous and difficult to describe? • Corporate Culture: Was your corporation a relaxed, enjoyable place to work where employees felt valued and could contribute? Or was your corporation a rule-oriented, regimented one where employees performed in their box? • Finally, how did management controls help the organization achieve or change its strategies and impact day-to-tasks?
