This assignment supports the following outcomes: • Describe the role of society/culture on film and literature (or vice versa). • Critique the quality of film and literature. • Appreciate how film and literature reflects society/culture. Assignment For this assignment, you will write a paper about how literature and film is reflected in and/or has influenced culture, or vice versa (how the culture is reflected in or has influenced literature and film). In order to complete this assignment, you should identify a culturally significant topic that is addressed in both film and literature. • For example, if you choose “race relations” as your topic, you may want to discuss the book To Kill a Mockingbird and the film Crash and discuss how the culture is reflected in each of the works. • Or, if you choose “protection of the environment” as your topic, you may want to discuss the book Silent Spring and the film An Inconvenient Truth and discuss how the works have influenced the culture/society. After your instructor has approved the topic and the associated works, write a paper in which you discuss either how the cultural topic was reflected in the two works, or how the two works influenced the culture. Your paper must include the following: 1. An introduction containing a thesis. 2. Body paragraphs that • Include a critique of the both works. The critique must contain your opinion of each the two works supported by examples. • Include a discussion of the role of society/culture on both the film and literature (or vice versa). 3. An effective conclusion that includes a discussion of any appreciation you have gained for how both film and literature are a reflection of a particular society/culture. Support your opinion with examples. You must incorporate research into your paper. Include the use of at least two outside sources (in addition to any course books or materials). Sources must be referenced properly according MLA or APA format as well as listed on a reference page.
