The poisons/groups of poisons in question are (i) clozapine, (ii) diamorphine (heroin), (iii) ethylene glycol, and (iv) potassium and sodium salts. The underlying aims of the assessment are to (i) ensure familiarity with basic medical terminology, (ii) ensure some understanding of some basic toxicological mechanisms, and (iii) give practice in writing a review-type scientific article. Clearly in the space (1,000 words, no more than 10 key references for each poison/group of poisons, i.e. in total no more that 4,000 words, 40 references) and time (6 weeks) available it is not possible to go into great detail on all aspects of the mechanism(s) of action of the poisons in all potential patient groups. General principles should be emphasised whenever possible in preference to simply cataloguing effects. It is equally important to note areas where the mechanism of action is unknown as to listing examples where the mechanism is seemingly well-understood. The assessment should be presented in the form of a scientific report that is to be considered for publication in a scientific journal, i.e. make use of sub-headings, tables, figures, etc. Figures and tables should have legends. There should be a title page with your name, the date, and the module number. There should be abstracts for each monograph, i.e. an abstract for each section of the assignment. References Harvard style in the text – see attached guidance for details. Figure/table legends, abstracts, and references do not count towards the word limit.
