Drawing on a range of examples of ethnographic research, this introductory workshop explores some of the basic concepts and skills of ethnographic methods, with particular reference to educational research. The aim of the workshop is to familiarise those attending with conceptual and theoretical issues in designing and implementing ethnographic research, focussing in particular on ''what is ethnography'' and on ''emic/etic'' debates. The workshop will operate through a mix of working methods: presentation on key themes and texts by the workshop tutor; discussion of key quotes from significant sources; inputs by participants on their own research contexts and on the applicability to them of ethnographic methods.
