Assessment task: You are a management consultant and your client has asked you for an in-depth analysis of its business or a part of its business. Note: You can choose any company of your choice but the company you have chosen must be a major MNC with presence in the ASEAN region. Your report must be based on an ASEAN context where examples are concerned. What is my data? Choose a case firm or an industry to analyse that interests you, e.g. a possible target for your next job. This is where you will get empirical examples (i.e. data) to fit into the theory. You can use the Web, the library resources or personal contacts to get the data but remember to reference it properly. What do I analyse it with? You can choose the aspects of the client that you wish to analyse. Choose a topic or an issue to analyse that interests you, e.g. as a possible next job area or just a part of the module that you really enjoyed. You must choose the relevant MIS theories to use from class and from academic journals. Remember that you must justify the number and the choice of theoretical concepts that you use in your analysis framework. Do they actually answer your research question? What is my research question? This is the focus of your analysis and it may also be the title of your report. Make it specific. You could pretend that this is the specific problem that your client has asked you to analyse and then make recommendations upon. How do I test my choice? You can choose your case firm (or industry or market), your analysis framework and your research question in any order. When you have chosen all three just ask yourself: do they all fit together logically and coherently? Are there any holes? Is the question interesting and why? Can I get hold of the data that the analysis framework needs? Important • The MAXIMUM SIZE of your report is 4,000 words – DO NOT use more. • Think about the specific research question that you are trying to investigate. • Think about which of the IS models and theories from class and academic journals can help you do this. • Think about the separate sections that make up the structure of your report: e.g. Title, Executive Summary, Contents page, Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Analysis, Discussion, Conclusions, Recommendations, References. Use numbered sections? How does the structure help you communicate and justify your conclusions? Make specific and justified recommendations. Picture the person or people that you are recommending to. • Reference all sources formally by using Harvard style.
