In the late 1970s and early 1980s, toxic waste contamination in communities such as the Love Canal in New York and Times Beach in Missouri resulted in stricter waste disposal laws and the establishment of the Superfund to pay for the cleanup of major contamination sites. In the 1990s, the effects of acid rain resulted in Congress amending the Clean Air Act to address the issue. These are just two examples of the responses of the government to threats to environmental health. After reviewing the Environmental Protection Agency’s Web site, choose an environmental health law (either on a state or national level) that is in an area of interest to you. Then respond to the following by Day 4: • Discuss evidence for how this law has improved human health outcomes or, conversely, has failed to live up to its promise in some way. • Defend your position using data and statistics. • Use proper paraphrasing and remember to reference the law.
