The assignment is to be based on an international construction company or large domestic construction company and an operation of this company should be chosen which can be improved or advanced (eg modernised) in some way. The scope of the problem could range from company wide to department specific; a macro or a micro operation. The solution should seek to bring about some substantial improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of the organisation. the resolution of the problem should focus on the concept of Total Quality Management (TQM). The way in which this resolution will be implemented must be supported by a project plan comprising at least twelve activities and will ideally be drawn up using microsoft Project. The critical activities must be identified and an attempt made at resource allocation eg. people and/or equipment. Alternatively, or in addition, a cost minimisation analysis should be carried out based on the use of crash times and costs. the nature of the problem, including a background to the organisation, the analysis of the problem and the proposed solution should be included in the body of the assignment (approx. 4000 words) but the plan and any calculations should be separate as an apendix. The report should be prepared as if for the consideration of senior management. The main part of the report should focus on the specific area of the construction company to be chosen for improvement or to be advanced in terms of services or systems. The report should consider how to implement and evaluate the consequences of the changes proposed including describing any negotiations required to agree and sucessfully implement the proposed changes. The chosen proposals should not be open ended and the report should include an evaluation of the implications that the proposal will have on the organisations resourses including a sample cost analysis. The report should provide a realistic assessment of how change would be managed in the organisation, including how other functional areas of the organisation might be affected by the changes. The impact should be assessed in terms of both the human and technical imapct, financial impact and consideration of an appropriate timescale.
