each student will go deeper into the topic of business ethics by exploring concepts and theories learned this class in greater detail and using the online resources of the internet and the library. the finished project will include the following parts: part 1. compose a letter, to either the government, the media, or one of the companies in the cases you are studying. in the letter you must do three things: describe several issues that you have found problematic explain why they are unethical make suggestions for change this letter should be written from the perspective of any stakeholder in the case. you may choose a specific identity based on a character in the novel, or a broader identity informed by what you''ve learned. imagination is less important than familiarity with the case and with the underlying ethical concerns. __________________________________________________________________________________________ part 2. · analyze an ethics code the report and presentation (part iii) are to be based on the following guidelines. 1. get and carefully read the written code of ethics of any two individual companies or any two professional or industrial groups. use the internet or your lirn to find these. the choice is up to you, but select only either within two company-specific codes or two professional or industrial group codes. these materials may be ones that are available to you from either your first-hand contacts with the companies or professional groups, or from publicly-available sources, such as the internet. for example, several good examples may be found online at http://www.ibe.org.uk/examples.html. 2. briefly describe the characteristics of these documents and compare them to one another with respect to key dimensions (e.g., length, level of specificity, presence or absence of enforcement guidelines, etc.). 3. analyze these documents by comparing them to characteristics of good ethical codes such as those described in the textbook and/or other sources, such as: · the twelve steps for implementing a code of ethics and the 8 steps for developing a code of ethics specified by the institue for business ethics (respectively, http://www.ibe. org.uk/implementing.html and http://www.ibe.org.uk/developing.html). · the “cookbook of ingredients” in effective codes, as specified by the american society of newspaper editors: http://www.asne.org/kiosk/editor/99.feb/steele1.htm 4. By juxtaposing each code to the other and by comparing each to the standards and guidelines identified above, identify the specific strengths of each code and identify specific ways in which each stands to be improved.
