ENGL092 Essay Assignment FINAL DRAFT DUE : Week 7 Background Every day we encounter hundreds of advertising messages. From the names of sports arenas, to internet pop-ups, billboards and the many print sources of advertising messages, we cannot escape advertising. In this essay, you will reflect on the techniques advertisers use to sell their products. Assignment Apply active reading strategies as you read the essay titled “The Power of Advertising” in your book. You can find this reading in the HUB’s Reading Port, chapter 16, page 675. Then consider this question as a possible thesis for an essay: • Can you think of a modern-day example or examples similar to the marketing of Listerine mouthwash? What other products present a “cure” for which advertisers need to invent a “disease.” (Ex. Teeth whiteners, air fresheners, bottled water). Next, draft an essay in which you present your idea. Support your essay with examples from your own experiences, and use ideas from “The Power of Advertising” for support for your essay. Additional support may come from a copy of an advertisement for the product you are analyzing. As you draft, you will also learn how to document an outside source. You will work on multiple drafts of this essay. You have a rough draft due in week six. Your instructor and/or a peer reviewer will provide you with feedback during week 6, and the final draft is due Week 7. Assignment Checklist In the final draft of your essay use Times New Roman 12-point font and double-space your paper.
