ABSTRACT The clinical use of 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is weighed by considering its potential diagnostic benefit against its potential risk to patients and MR personnel. The higher strength of the magnet opens up the scope for higher risk to staff, patients and visitors. This calls upon strict safety guidelines to be put in place to avoid workplace accidents. This project will review the literature on the guidelines, polices, documents and research papers regarding the safety of 3 T MRI sites. Data will be collected from various documents prepared by MRI governing bodies. The aim is to eventually develop a safety guideline for 3 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging environment at Blacktown hospital. Some of the issues that will be addressed are pregnant staff, and patients, issues dealing with high static magnetic fields, radio frequency pulse energy, acoustic noise, safety zones and MRI compatible medical and implant devices. This research is of a non- experimental with historical design. The final product will benefit administrators and managers planning to invest in a 3 T MR scanner. In addition, future researchers and policy developers will also be able to use this as a reference in development of safe work practice and occupational health and safety documents for their MRI modalities. However, this document will facilitate in the safety of 3 Tesla MRI scanner at Blacktown Medical Imaging Department. This project will highlight significant information related to the safety issues of 3T MR scanner. The final documentation will be ready for submission by the end of October, 2008. research questions: how to screen staff & patients for safety before entering the MRI room? What are the necessary questions for screening patients? What are the 3 Tesla compatible medical instruments, equipment and prosthesis, etc? What are the various safety zones and who is authorised to enter? What procedures should be followed during various types of emergencies?
