You are required to critically examine the BCG growth/share matrix for an organisation of your choice. These may be domestic organisations or Multinational Companies. It can be service providers or manufacturers. The specific question is what the consequences are if competing organisations find out that a company is using this matrix as a strategic tool. Discuss (with examples) different scenarios how this can be exploited. You can draw on primary and / or secondary sources of information. You should specifically but not exclusively refer to Unit 2 - Section 1 of your course book. Assignment Guidelines Your evaluation can draw upon any part of the syllabus (backed up with appropriate references) that you believe to be relevant, as long as the issues you discuss are capable of contributing to “Strategic Analysis and Choice”. In terms of your recommendations, there are no ‘right’ answers to this question. All that is required is that your chosen scenarios are credible, given the organisation’s current industry position. Your answer should be in the form of a structured essay, fully referenced in the Harvard style. You may lose marks if you exceed the word limit. Appendices are permitted, but these should only be used to provide supporting information to your main arguments. Where you experience difficulty in gaining specific information, you are allowed to make intelligent assumptions about your organisation, as long as you identify and justify them. We are not looking for a formal strategic plan as an answer. Instead we want to see a well-argued, critical essay, backed up by appropriate empirical data and academic theories. In terms of the theories that you use in your essay, you should build upon the core textbook. Evidence of any further reading will be rewarded. Avoid making claims without any supporting evidence including specific company examples. Any author or any secondary data source that you cite in support of your analysis must be listed in your Reference section at the end of the essay.
