You are required to develop a Management Skills Learning and Development Action Plan that describes the skills, resources, and other requirements you’ll need to further your career aspirations. In this plan we ask you to lay out your career goals and career opportunities. The action plan should be in six parts and you should keep to the headings outlined below. The report will evaluate the appropriateness of your learning goals, how well you justify your plan and how closely your plan links to your analysis. In other words we are assessing your ability not only to assess the strengths and weaknesses of your skills but your ability to then plan to improve your skills so that you are able to achieve future career ambitions, We also encourage you to invite a colleague or employer to assist with this development plan. Hence, this assignment may create an opportunity for you to discuss goals with your employers. The plan should be kept focused and tight so that it remains within the 2,000 word limit. 1. Career Goal and Career Opportunities Where are you now and where do you want to be in 3 year’s time? What are the opportunities for you out there in the marketplace? 2. About myself Some information about yourself, that was made evident during this course, and can contribute to future career aspirations e.g. learning style, personality type, values. 3. Current Skills Inventory What are the three specific management skills you’ll need to improve in order to further your career aspirations? (Please choose 3 skills that you did not develop in your first assignment) List your three main skill strengths and three skills that need improvement. Strengths can be defined as areas in which you can make an immediate impact on your role as manager, with little or no improvement required. Weaknesses can be defined as those job-related areas which you require significant skills development and focus. You might want to ask yourself: What are my strengths so that I can take advantage of the opportunities? What’s stopping me? What skills do I need to learn? 4. Learning Goals As a result of undergoing a skills inventory what are your main goals? How are you going to achieve them? This is where you read literature and discuss the insights you have obtained from the concepts to understand how you may change your behaviour and be more effective in the future. Your career goals will be longer term while your learning goals will be shorter term and more specific – make them SMART. 5. Plan Develop some strategies and action plans. What are the likely barriers you’re likely to encounter to achieve your career and learning goals? (Remember to substantiate your plans using relevant literature otherwise it sounds like manager’s comment) How are you going to achieve your goals? What resources will you require? Whose support will you need? What must be done? By whom? By when? 6. Resources/References This is an opportunity for you to list the key resources/references that were of particular assistance to you in putting this plan together. It may be research you have done on the web; discussion with particular people; books you have read, particularly theories that have or are likely to influence your practice. A minimum of 6 references
