Slaves and Slave Owners in Ante-Bellum America GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: What we now refer to as “slave culture” developed mostly on the large plantations of the rural south. Using Hine et. al. Chapter 6 and, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, compare and contrast “slave culture” with “planter culture” in the plantation south A term that is widely used in the history of the ante-bellum south is the plantocracy which refers not only to slave owners and their families, but also to the whole culture that developed to uphold and maintain the system of slavery. Use Incidents to provide specific examples to answer the following questions. In your essay you should consider where the culture of the enslaved and the plantocracy overlapped and where they diverged. How much of the difference in cultures was intentional and how much was a byproduct of the system of slavery? Do you see any ways that the cultures of the enslaved affected the culture of the plantocracy? Links: Harriet A.
