I have begun my thesis on Deconstructing Memorials in South Africa. I am on to my last chapter, and this is where I am having difficulty with my research. This chapter deals with the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria. I attempt to a) depict how the architects of this Monument designed / constructed it out of a racial ideology that reflects an ontological and teleoligical modernist mode of thought. I then explore how when one deconstructs these ''modernist'' practices through post structuralism, one is able to show how the Monument, despite its emotionally charged past, is able to remain a relevant site within the post-apartheid society. Thus, I deconstruct ontology and teleology in the Voortrekker Monument and in doing so explain how this is relevant in a post-apartheid South Africa. I need further information on ontology and teleology, as well as the Voortrekker Monument. I utilise the Harvard Method in this thesis. I will also attach the chapter as it stands today with comments. I would appreciate further research and input.
