Here is what I have written so far.
Cubism was developed in the early 20th century by artists such as Pablo Picasso and George Braque. Pablo Picasso and George Braque were influenced by Paul Cezanne paintings of and by African sculptures. Unlike earlier artist’s works which had recognizable, realistic forms, in Cubist paintings the subject matter was broken up, analyzed by the painter, and then reassembled in an abstracted form of shapes and stark designs.
To better understand Cubism we first have to analyze works of art by Paul Cezanne. Paul Cezanne was a well know painter in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Many of his earlier works were not abstract. Near the end of his life Paul Cezanne began to paint using only simple shapes and forms to create a three dimensional space. Looking at Mont Sainte-Victoire by Paul Cezanne clearly see the use of basic overlapping shapes of squares and cones to represent object in space. Pablo Picasso once said that Paul Cezanne was the founding father of Cubism. Later on Pablo Picacasso started using the same techniques as seen in Paul Cezanne’s paintings and taking it a step further to what is now known as Cubism.
The first Cubist painting is largely considered to be by Pablo Picasso’s first, formative abstract work entitled “Les Demoiselles d''Avignon,” a 1907 oil on canvas, that was influenced not only by the paintings by Paul Cézanne and by the fauvists, but also by real African sculptures. The subjects of this picture were not ‘good’ women of the city of Avignon, but prostitutes of a street named Avignon. This choice of subject matter also marked a radical break of Picasso with what was considered to be appropriate subjects for art. “Little in their previous acquaintance either with Picasso''s painting or that of other aesthetically radical artists in Paris in 1907 could have prepared those who viewed ‘Les Demoiselles d''Avignon’ that year for the experience.” (Cottington, p. 4)
