REPUBLICANS---Incumbent president William McKinley campaigned--from the front porch of his home again--on the economic prosperity of the country, the gold standard for our money supply, and maintaining and governing the new U.S. empire--Hawaii,Guam, Wake Island, Puerto Rico and the Philippines--despite the fighting that had broken out in the Philippines. He was an even stronger candidate than he had been in 1896, with the addition of Spanish-American war hero Teddy Roosevelt, the current governor of New York, as his vice-presidential running mate. Roosevelt traveled the nation with his dynamic speaking style, and criticized Democratic candidate Bryan whenever he could, as well as supporting America’s new overseas empire.. DEMOCRATS--ran William Jennings Bryan again who campaigned on adding silver to the money supply, more programs for farmers, and a new issue, anti-imperialism. As in 1896, he traveled the nation, often from the back of a train where his booming voice could reach the rear of any crowd. He warned that our overseas territories would cause us trouble, were not in keeping with American principles, and would have to be defended against other strong nations someday. RESULTS: McKinley 7,218,491 popular votes (52%)-292 electoral votes; Bryan 6,356,734 popular votes (45%)-155 electoral votes. POSTSCRIPT: On December 7, 1941, the same day Pearl Harbor in Hawaii was attacked by Japanese air forces, the islands of Guam, Wake, and the Philippines were also attacked. Bryan’s prediction had come true, America’s overseas empire now had to be defended.
