The focus of this course is Western literature of the mid-19 to mid -20 centuries. Your final paper is about an author who wrote during this time and lived in the United States, the British Isles, Canada, Western Europe, South America or Russia. You may choose an author we have discussed in class, or choose another author with whom you are familiar or wish to read. You must choose several readings by your author to analyze and evaluate. Use your analysis to explain why you believe the author should occupy a place in classic modern literature. In this final paper, you should use approaches and techniques we have utilized in your response logs and class discussion to review the writing. What does the author contribute to literature in general? Does the author reflect or impact the time in which he or she writes? Why is the literature valuable to your overall education? These are just a few questions you may consider in shaping your paper. You are nominating an author for "classic" status, so be creative in your approach to the project. You may include photos, or other inserts into your paper that will be add to the content. Be sure to always include attribution if you retrieve any information from the internet or any other sources. You will support your analysis with references to primary sources. The Paper: The paper should be 5 pages, standard 12-point font, and MLA format. Therefore, it should be double-spaced. Your paper should include some direct quotes from the writing of your author to illustrate why you thing he or she represents the classic modern literary canon. If you quote or paraphrase, you must have in-text citations. You must also have a Works Cited or References page, all properly cited according to the format you choose.
