Because intellectual property can be one of a business’s most important assets in the modern era, we will be doing some exploration of that topic. The running hypothetical throughout our textbook also involves a business that was begun in order to market an intellectual property development. Please research and then write upon the following topics: 1. What is a copyright? What types of works can be protected by a copyright? In what ways can you acquire a copyright? What rights belong to the owner of a copyright? How long do different kinds of copyrights last? 2. What is meant by fair use? Please explain what types of usage of copyright materials constitute fair use and what standards are used to determine this. 3. What is a patent? What types of works can be patented? In what ways can you acquire a patent? What are the legal standards in determining whether a patent may be issued? What rights belong to the owner of a patent? How long do patents last? 4. What is a trade secret? What types of information can be protected? What standards determine whether information can constitute a trade secret? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a trade secret versus some other type of intellectual property protection? 5. Finally, but perhaps most importantly, research and describe a situation in which a business has effectively used intellectual property law to further its business interests and/or to impair a competitor. The creativity and diligence that you bring to this section of the paper can really help enhance your grade on the project. Please utilize and cite in your paper at least five (5) sources. You may use any citation system that you prefer and which provides the reader with sufficient information to find the source for independent review.
