<Background> (Avg. 2 ½ pages) Problem Statement (Avg. ½ to ¾ pages) There are employees and environmental issues that have far reaching effects that caused the federal government to recognize the benefits that telecommuting provides. The specific problem is that most of the private sector has not readily adopted telecommuting within the corporate environment. To understand this problem, a quantitative study will be created to survey two groups of employees from the private sector within the United States. The two groups used in the study are those who telecommute, either full or part time, and those who commute daily to a corporate office. Purpose (Avg. ¾ page) The purpose of this quantitative correlational study is to investigate the variations between those who commute from those who telecommute. The variations may be tabulated more practicably using quantitative tools rather than qualitative tools. The design of the study will include an Internet survey that allows a broader base of respondents to answer pertinent questions regarding the impact of telecommuting to the employee and the environment. This study will compare the independent variables of those who commute or telecommute to the dependent variables regarding perceived job satisfaction, autonomy, and social isolation, as well as environmental impacts from telecommuting. The selected population chosen for this study are Microsoft based software developers located in the United States, although this could be narrowed down to a specific geographical area such as South Florida. Significance of the Study (Avg. 1 page) The significance of the study is to show that commuting and telecommuting have an impact on software developers and the environment. Existing research will be examined to draw out other related findings regarding telecommuting. The significance to the private sector is to provide specific findings that may or may not influence software developer’s decision concerning telecommuting. <Nature of the Study> (Avg. 1 to 5 pages) Research Questions (Avg. 1 to 5 pages a.) The following questions guided the research study: R1: How is job satisfaction affected by commuting or by telecommuting? R2: How is autonomy affected by commuting or by telecommuting? R3: How is social isolation affected by commuting or by telecommuting? R4: How is the environment affected by commuting or by telecommuting? Hypotheses (Avg. 1 to 5 pages b.) The following hypotheses reply to the research questions. The literature review revealed little empirical research that would identify software developers who telecommute to have any specific levels of effect by either commuting or by telecommuting. HA1: There are no significant differences between telecommuting and commuting regarding job satisfaction. HA2: There are no significant differences between telecommuting and commuting regarding autonomy. HA3: There are no significant differences between telecommuting and commuting regarding social impact. HA4: There are no significant differences between telecommuting and commuting regarding the environment.
