eng 101: college writing instructor name kevin jones, d.a. contact information 916 564 3100, kevin.jones@tui.edu, fax 916 564 3131 course description this course focuses on developing composition skills and writing techniques. learners will demonstrate an ability to use the basic mechanics of language effectively and to express themselves clearly in well-organized essays. learning outcomes & competencies form syntactically-correct sentences construct sentences using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling construct coherent paragraphs focused around a unifying theme organize paragraphs effectively, with each progressing to the next select appropriate, well-chosen words create a clear outline express ideas appropriate to the essay topics set develop a thesis and provide appropriate supporting arguments produce a college-level essay which successfully develops a subject from thesis to conclusion and adheres to academic expectations of tone, style and format proofread and revise written work effectively readings & resources diana hacker, a writer’s reference, 6th edition, bedford/st. martin’s (or a similar text) assignments papers are due approximately every two weeks. that is the first assignment is due by the end of the second week of the term, the second by the end of the fourth, the third by the end of the sixth week, and the final paper due at the end of the term. in the first paper, i would ask you to reflect on where you live. this can be your state, your region, your town, your home. reflect on what makes it what it is, and why you live there. the paper should be approximately three pages long, doublespaced and in either apa or mla style. in the second paper, i’d like you to discuss the first time you experienced something. it could be something job-related, could be the first time you were able to stay up on a bicycle, the first taste of a particular food. your first time in a new (or most recent time) school by now, ideally, your text will have arrived. if so, please consult it, and use mla style to format the paper. for the third paper, examine what you do when you’re not at work (yes, i know—write interminable papers for evil professors). what interest you? hobbies, a second (or third) job? family? home improvements? hunting? fishing? camping? length: the usual three pages. please use apa style for this one. the final paper is research-oriented. that’s to say i want you to go beyond personal opinion and search/research sources that support, elaborate, affirm what you’re saying about your topic (have there been topics from other classes, or from your writings in college english which you’d care to revisit and recast as a research paper?). please make this one eight pages with a references/works cited page. either mla or apa style for this one: your choice. written work the four papers are described above. after the first paper, i expect the papers to follow either apa or mla format. please keep in mind that i’m always happy to read any paper as a draft. so if you ever have a paper in which you’re unsure meets the assignment, send it along and i’ll advise. participation/attendance/interaction i hope to hear from learners at least every two weeks, when papers are due, and when they are returned with grades and comments, but i’d prefer to hear from you weekly with questions and comments. for instance: dr. jones, i’m thinking about doing paper three on_____. what do you think?” evaluation grading standards are on an attached sheet following. the first three papers are each worth approximately 23% of your final grade; the final paper approximately thirty percent. failure to turn in one of the shorter papers could lower your grade by one letter; failure to turn in the final paper could lower your grade by two letters. final deadline for all work please have papers in by the end of the weeks indicated. if a paper is going to be late, please let me know. i’m well aware that things in the lives of adult learners can sometimes change/interrupt/ abruptly, so am fairly sympathetic about extensions and deadlines, but if there’s something holding up a paper, please let me know. please refer to the learners’ handbook for policies regarding academic integrity & american disabilities’ act or http://www.tui.edu/asn/serv_learner_disab/default.asp for further assistance regarding UIU compliance with ADA.
