Consider your text in light of the literary movements, and decide if the text is Romantic, Neoclassical, Modernist, Naturalist, or Postmodern in its values. Here is the structure my teacher wants. 1. In the first paragraph, identify text, source, and reception. a. Briefly (1-2 sent.) sketch the content of the movie or program. b. Then, move in on specifics (2-4 sent)--the text''s theme of refection and alienation, the exaltation of children, teh restorative powers of nature, whatever issue or issues are relevant to your thesis, which will answer the auestion: c. In what ways does the text embody or interrogate the values of the literacy period it most engages? This should be your thesis statement. 2. Two or more paragraphs supporting the thesis: In each paragraph, treat one aspect of the text and explain what it says about a relevant issue. Remember to begin each paragraph with a topic sentence that states not only what the text says or shows but also what''s important about that feature. 3. The So What? Paragraph. The conclusion must expand the context of the thesis. Some questions that might help you include: In what ways does the text''s popularity/lack therefore indicate trends and tastes in American culture? Is the American mindset predominantly Romantic? Naturalist? Or struggling among exclusice ideas about humans and their surroundings? Be sure to link the text you''ve discussed to others; for example, if you have discussed an unpopular text, consider the features that make it unappealing to a mainstream audience. Likewise, if you''re looking at a hugely popular movie, consider what it might have in common with other popular texts. Feel free to include some So Whats? Of a more personal nature and application-- what has your inspection of the text brought to your own awareness?
