This is a History paper for the Comparative Special Subject module War and Society, in which we covered the subject of war throughout the whole of history. The essay itslef is going to be 2000 words long, and in it I am arguing that war and peace are the ends of a spectrum; it is impossible to have absolute peace; peace is an anachronism; war and peace coexist within the same society; a society can be organised for war yet be at peace and vice versa. I have lots of ideas but what I need is evidence to back this up. I need to have quotes, examples from reading, show that I am aware of the historiographical debate and a critical overview of the literature. This doesn''t need to be in essay form as I will incorperate it into the essay, although a couple of paragraphs on historiography/literature would be helpful. I may use Prussia ( & Germany pre-WW1), Franks, Vikings, Mongols, Cold War & colonial powers as examples of how war and peace can coexist I just need evidence from literature on them to back this up.
