This that follows is what the request for this essay: "End-of-course assessment: the question : You are the sole judge of a new literary competition in which you have to choose the best novel of the twentieth century. The short-list is made up of the following four novels: Sunset Song by Lewis Grassic Gibbon Orlando by Virginia Woolf Paradise by Abdulrazak Gurnah The Ghost Road by Pat Barker In an essay of 3,000 words: (1) Elaborate the criteria to be applied in choosing the winning novel. This discussion must be informed by the theoretical and critical debates in the course material. (2) Analyse TWO of the novels listed above – the novel you think should win the prize and one of the other short-listed novels. Notes Your essay should be in the form of one continuous piece of prose, but think carefully about the structure of your answer. In terms of word length, allocate up to 1,000 words to Part (1) and up to 1,000 words to each of the two selected novels in Part (2). These are very approximate figures, but they should ensure that you give careful consideration to all elements of the question. For Part (1), you should engage with the relevant critical and theoretical issues raised in the course material, and you should then extend/apply your discussion in Part (1) to the analysis of your two selected novels in Part (2). The criteria should be understood as the standards for judging the literary texts, and as such they will provide the basis for comparing the literary texts. You are free to argue for whatever criteria you consider appropriate, but it would be advisable to engage with the criteria frequently used in judging literature. In deciding the criteria for choosing your prize-winner, you will find relevant discussion in the course material in the Introduction to Part 2 of The Popular and the Canonical, in Chapter 5 (on the Nobel Prize and Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot) and in Chapter 7 (on the Booker Prize and Abdulrazak Gurnah’s Paradise). You should feel free, however, to range over the whole course in considering which criteria are appropriate for this prize. For example, you might refer back to the writers in Part 1 of Aestheticism and Modernism (are the standards of aestheticism or instrumentalism appropriate here?); to the contending modernists in Part 2 (are the criteria for judging literature suggested by Eliot, Woolf, Brecht and Okigbo, as well as certain critics of their work, appropriate here?); or to the popular writers and their sympathetic critics in Part 1 of The Popular and the Canonical (are the criteria for judging popular literature in a positive light appropriate here?). There is no ‘correct’ answer for this first 23 part of the question; a clear exposition of your chosen criteria, your reasons for prioritising them over other competing criteria and an indication that you have some sense of the wider debates are the requirements. Having established your criteria, explain your choice of the winner, as well as your reasons for discussing the second novel (valid reasons might be because in terms of your criteria it is the runner-up to your winning novel, or because its weaknesses best illustrate the strengths of your chosen winner). Throughout your essay, you need to signpost clearly the relation between your criteria and your two selected novels. For each of the two novels, you should analyse exemplary passages that fulfil (or fail to fulfil) your criteria.
