Shadow Principals: sat in on parent conferences to help my understanding on how parents think when they are concerned with their child being treated fairly, their academics and behavior in general. It is my understanding that parents want to feel a sense of trust for the school and fairness. Parents can be reasoned with when they overcome negative feelings about the situation. Other shadows were teacher evaluations. They have to bedone fairly also. A pre-conference has to be done first and a time set up for the evaluation. When I did the evaluation on my own I find that it is a good idea to give the staff what is expected of them in advance. Also, it helps me with what to look for during an evaluation process. Lunchroom duty allowed me to work with lunch aides, lunchroom volunteers, the administration and the cooks in the lunchroom. To make sure the lunchroom runs smoothly I came up with lunchroom rules and procedures, traffic flow, making sure students go outside along with incentives for students. I find that when incentives are used students respond much better to rules and procedures not just in the lunchroom but other school activities. Testing Coordinator was another duty I have had. First of all the building all school year long has to be conducive to teaching and learning then at testing time the building and the students are ready for testing. I like to have a schedule so that everyone knows what to do: the ESP teachers, the SE teachers, what to do when students are late, volunteers and I like for each room to have a proctor to deliver test booklets, stay in the classrooms then deliver the test to me at the end of testing. In my library media position I have a yearly library budget with different budget numbers and line item amounts. I have mastered using the Financial Management System (FMS) for purchase orders and balancing the budget throughout the school year. I feel that continuing education will help me become a better educational leader, therefore, I accept and encourage others to take advantage of professional growth opportunities as well as attend professional meetings. When I attend meeting it helps my growth and I am able to bring the information back to my staff and have training activities for the school staff. The principal has to convey successfully to the staff how attendance and on time is important to the success of the school. I have successfully chaired attendance committees to improve the attendance throughout the building. This effected the attendance percentages from the previous year by 12 % which I felt was a great gain and certainly helped to reduce absenteeism. As a classroom teacher I have communicated well with students, parents, secretaries, other teachers, the custodian and the administration. In fact, I believe that has helped me in my present position because in the media center I am communication daily with everyone. As the Guidance Liaison I was able to contact and meet several people within the community in addition to introducing them tothe schools program, the student body. Someone from the community is on the interviewing team for the building personnel. In fact, one year I got someone from our career day to become very involved in the school as a community liaison. In addition, to someone from the community, a parent, a teacher, an administrator and someone from the teachers union is a part of the interviewing team and approves all new building personnel. It has been my experience to prepare questions suitable for the position so that everyone on the interviewing team has a question to ask the person interviewing for the position. This has been a very effective way to select personnel because everyone feels important and a part of the process. Staff meetings is another way to inform the staff not just the administrator speaking but also bringing in speakers who can be very effective motivators for a staff. For example, I was working with a staff that just did not seem to be motivated, therefore, I invited a motivational speaker to come in during a staff meeting and we were involved with activities and the speaker came back. Would you know that helped our staff through the rest of the school year. And I find that sometimes we have staff members who can be great speakers for a staff meeting. In fact, as an administrative intern, I asked one teacher to present some great idea they could share with the staff for each meeting which was an idea that helped everyone. Another administrative project I had was to make security drill and fire drill directions, with drawings for each classroom in the building. I actually drew these for every room in the building which was a great experience to learn the safety, emergency and security plans throughout the entire building. raining the school records were kept in the office in small file drawers.. I would check them each semester to make sure each teacher had written at least one contact to parents.
