How much of a threat would it have been to U.S. sovereignty if the Axis Powers had won the war? Perhaps the end of America as we know it. According to a document found in the German archives at the end of the war, there had been some discussions between the governments of Germany and Japan about how to divide the U.S. if the Axis defeated America. One option would have been to divide the U.S. at the Rocky Mountains. The Japanese would have control of the territory west of the Rockies, and it was mentioned that area could have been turned into a huge food growing region for the large Japanese empire, which would have also included Alaska and Hawaii. Germany would take the eastern portion of the U.S., which included the heart of American industry at the time--Gary, Indiana; Chicago, Illinois; Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Cleveland and Akron, Ohio; Birmingham, Alabama; and Atlanta, Georgia. Although there was no mention of the slave labor camps that were being set up near farming and industrial areas in the parts of Europe that Germany controlled, one can imply that such camps might have been part of the German empire in America. Two populations that Hitler despised lived in great numbers in this area--Jews and Blacks. Further speculation would mark these populations as the first to be sent to such camps. But could the Axis powers actually have won the war? Only if the war would have lasted two more years or longer. And that might have happened if the Soviet Union was not tying down, killing and capturing millions of German troops on the eastern front. With more time, Hitler’s scientists could have perfected the long range rocket they were working on that could have crossed the Atlantic Ocean to hit American targets. By war’s end, this long range rocket--the V-3, was still on the drawing board and had not even been tested. They were also working on a nuclear weapon, but were far behind the U.S. in this effort. Eventually a long range rocket with nuclear war heads could have started destroying American cities along the east coast--and speculation would then rest on how many of those disasters the American government could tolerate before they surrendered. A more likely possibility in terms of a German nuclear attack would have been for them to hit American cities with a “dirty bomb”, the type we fear from terrorists today. This type of bomb would not be hugely destructive of lives and property as a full-fledged nuclear weapon would be, but it would render a large area of a city useless indefinitely from radiation. Hitler is on record as saying several times that the two cities he would most like to hit were--New York City and Washington D.C., the same targets the terrorists selected in 2001.
