This is a Research Paper. Please, Please, and Please follow this Requirement/Description!!! Please begin by searching in the New York Times Index, which can be found in the library, Main Branch of FLP, most other college libraries, and regional (but not local branches). The Main Branch of the FLP has a subscription database, ProQuest, which has links directly to the articles to be found in the New York Times. You have to be at the library itself to use it. Begin your search in the year you''ve been given and look, initially, under & amp;amp;quot;Murder & amp;amp;quot; (if yours is a murder case). Although many of these cases can be found on the Internet, your primary source should be the New York TImes. Requirements: * 10 to 12 pages, double-spaced, 12 point type, 8.5 x 11 inch white paper * MLA documentation as described in Hacker, including parenthetical documentation * minimum of twenty (20) sources in works (bibliography) * at least one comment note appended You will become the authority on your case. Present the facts of the case, as well as the social and pertinent historical conditions. Utilize the “fact” sheet to get started. You may wish to consult an encyclopedia for general information about the period. Sources will most likely be drawn mainly from newspaper accounts, but don’t limit your search to just the newspaper stories. Be sure to check editorials as well. You may wish to contact a local paper and/or historical society regarding your case. Keep in mind, though, that time is tight. Check at the Main Branch, too, for what newspapers and magazines they may have available for your time period. Internet sources may yield something, but be extremely critical about the sources you find there. Print the source and document the date you found your material. Your final paper will relate the incidents and resolution, if any. The final two pages of your paper should evaluate the case. If the case is unsolved, you will have to offer your idea of the solution, based on your research. If someone was convicted for this crime, was the right person convicted? Was justice served? What mistakes were made? The paper should be written in your own grammatically correct style. Newspapers of the 19th and early 20th century were frequently given to hyperbole. Remember: there is no such thing as an objective press. Evaluate all that you read with a bit of skepticism. Information that is generally known, or frequently repeated (e.g., the 20th President of the United States) may be assumed to be general information—not needing documentation. Quotations must be documented according to the form designated in Hacker. Qualities of an ‘A’ paper * introduction and conclusion * all pertinent information about the case and the period * conclusion follows form what is developed in the body of the paper * factually accurate * all internal documentation is accurate and contained in works page * works citations are accurate according to Hacker and in alphabetical order * grammatically and organizationally sound * cohesive—the paper holds together and leaves no unanswered questions for the reader * free from plagiarism of any sort Research Paper Checklist* * Quotations are appropriately documented (parenthetical documentation with date: page). All material quoted and/or cited in the body of the paper is included on the Works page. At least ONE content note must be included with appropriate citation(s). * Bibliography—Works—page is correct in form: hanging (reverse) indentation, alphabetical order, terminal period after each entry, no numbering or bullet points. * Quotations are accurate and introduced by a variety of structures other than “said.” Wherever possible, quotations should be incorporated into your own prose. Use [sic] to indicate accurately quoted misspellings and grammatical errors (use this sparingly). * Paper is typed in 12 point black print with one inch margins and double-spaced. * Date of your case is mentioned several times throughout the paper. * Attempts have been made to include physical descriptions of people involved as well as locations. * No “you” or “I” in the body of the paper. * Paper is written using past tense verbs throughout. * The paper is well organized and easy for the reader to follow without becoming lost in a mass of detail. * Your analysis (about 500 words) follows the exposition of your case. Your conclusions should be logical, based on the facts you present in the body of your paper.
