Please note the following: - Your submitted essay should not be longer than 1,500 words. - Ensure that all sources of information are accurately cited with in-text references, and a full bibliography provided. If your essay is not properly referenced it will fail. Non-referenced essays (ie containing no in-text references) are not acceptable and will receive a mark of 0%. If you have any doubts regarding referencing please consult the module leader. - The essay must consist primarily of your own words. You may quote other sources to illustrate the points that you are making, but keep these short (40 words max). An essay that primarily consists of other writers’ words will fail, even if properly referenced. - You are welcome to use the WWW as a source for your essays. It is a good source of academic articles, newspaper articles, and official reports. However it should be used with caution and as a supplement to academic texts, not a replacement. If you have doubts about the academic acceptability of an online site then do not use it. Avoid using web sources that you cannot cite by an author. The Harvard Referencing Format You must use the Harvard System of acknowledging and referencing sources in all essays and all other pieces of academic writing, such as projects or reports. The way in which references should be presented according to the Harvard System is as follows: In the text, a reference is shown like this: "Our ancestors may well have been predisposed to walking upright by virtue of the time that their ancestors had spent hanging about in trees. Brachiating - swinging by the arms - means the animal has to hold its body in a vertical position for long periods of time; primates that brachiate often adopt a more upright posture on the ground than true quadrupeds (Wheeler, 1988: 62).
