The paper must include a table of contents, an introduction, main body, a conclusion, and a bibliography. Be sure to include assignment title, course number, your name, student ID number, and date on the front cover of the project. You must interact with at least 6 scholarly source, meaning journal articles, books, and commentaries. You are advised to stay away from general, devotional, and sermonic sources (e.g. Bible dictionaries, encyclopedias, popular preachers’ sermons, etc.). Works by devotional writers including Ironside, Wiersbe, McGee, and others are not acceptable for the purpose of this paper. GRADING GUIDELINES FOR RESEARCH PAPER/PROJECT Once you have decided whether you want to write a research paper . You will need to use a total of six (6) scholarly resources (the Bible—especially study Bibles, Bible dictionaries/encyclopedias, and concordances will not be counted as part of your six scholarly resources!). The paper must be at least twelve (12) but not more than twenty (20) full pages in length, typed, double-spaced, and reasonable margins. 2. You must use Kate Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (sixth edition) as your style guide. Any other style must be approved by the professor first. For examples on proper style, see the information provided on Blackboard. 3. Your paper should include a cover sheet, footnotes, and a bibliography (These pages do not count as part of your total). 4. You will be graded on the basis of clarity, content, style, and how well you incorporate your resources and scripturally support your conclusions. Spelling, grammar and overall neatness will also be taken into account for the grade. Grading Scale for Papers Structure (20%) 1. Is there a clear thesis statement? Does the thesis statement give a clear indication of the topic of the presentation or paper? 2. Is there an introduction that offers a clear overview of the contents of the paper or presentation? 3. Are the transitions between paragraphs and sections clear? 4. Is there a conclusion that offers a good summary of the issues treated? 5. Are issues for further study mentioned? Content (60%) 1. Are the passages/topics under consideration clearly defined? 2. Does the structure reflect a careful/logical treatment of the topic? Is critical thinking employed? 3. Are the main passages of Scripture and/or the main issues of discussion addressed and interpreted properly? 4. Is the author’s intent in each Scripture passage (where applicable) examined and clearly stated? 5. Is the analysis of each passage or issue thorough? 6. Does the student interact with sources instead of merely restating their views? 7. Does the student provide areas where the information discovered in research may be relevant and applicable to the lives of Christians in today’s world? 8. Does the student show creativity and originality in presentation and thought? 9. Are the main points clearly stated and easily understood? 10. Does the student provide information on all relevant resources used? Materials/Style (20%) 1. Are six approved scholarly sources used? 2. Are materials properly cited and quoted? Are quotes relevant to the study? 3. Is the paper properly formatted? Are the entries in the bibliography and footnotes properly formatted? Are proper headings used? 4. Is the paper without spelling and grammatical errors? 5. Does the paper reflect a graduate level of vocabulary? The paper will be graded by the depth and amount of interaction with the primary sources chosen and by the form and quality of scholarly content and sources. You must follow Turabian’s style (6th edition). Use the standard 12 pt. font, Times New Roman. An “A” quality paper must be written in proper form, must include a strong bibliography, and show interaction with those sources in bibliography.
