Title Assignment 1 Details Write a 3-5 page essay comparing and contrasting the traits of the disciplined mind with the traits of the undisciplined mind. Explore this topic in relation to one ethical issue of your choice. For instance, you could look at the issue of divorce and explore how you, others, or the community looks at this issue both from a “limited” undisciplined perspective as well as from a “more fair-minded” disciplined point of view. Likewise, you could look at the issue of taxation to support governmental social service programs. Again, you would look at the issue from the point of view of a disciplined thinker and compare this perspective to what an undisciplined thinker might consider. Ethics can be defined in broad terms since as it states in the Webster’s Dictionary, ethics is “the study of conducts and moral judgment; the system of morals for a particular person, community, or culture.” Your options for this assignment are numerous. You may focus on yourself (e.g., your “disciplined” and “undisciplined” approach to an ethical issue); you may focus on another’s view in comparison to your view of an issue (e.g., someone you know and his approach to issue as opposed to yours and how you both use disciplined and undisciplined thinking patterns), or you may focus on a culture’s approach to an ethical issue (e.g., politicians disciplined and undisciplined approaches to ethical issues). You may even focus on a global issue (e.g., global warming, world peace) and consider how disciplined and undisciplined thinkers might approach this issue. Write this paper in a professional manner and from an outsider’s point of view. You are required to use a minimum of three and a maximum or five outside sources for this paper. One of these sources must in some way deal with the issue from a perspective that differs from your own. You may use newspaper articles, magazine articles, interview materials, Internet resources, philosophical materials gathered from alternative texts, etc. You do not have to use scholarly sources for this paper although you may explore them if you so choose. You are not limited to the above mentioned examples. You can be creative and use your own insights gleaned both from your reading and from your personal experiences.
