To what extent can a cross- curricular approach to planning and teaching enrich learning experiences for children in primary schools? 2000 words Submission Date: Monday 21st April Return Date: Friday 23rd May Additional guidance: • The title for this assignment is ‘Cross-curricular planning and teaching” • The assignment requires that you use your experiences of planning and teaching a series of cross-curricular lessons whilst on placement to reflect on the implications for children’s learning. • A possible structure for the assignment could be: o With reference to literature, a general introduction to cross-curricular planning and teaching; a discussion of the different interpretations and models used in schools; how these link to theories of learning; how a cross-curricular model can promote the development of knowledge, skills and understanding and the strengths and challenges of planning and teaching in this way. o A critical reflection on the learning experiences of the children through the lessons you taught on practice. This may include reference to specific examples of children’s learning (eg work samples, photographs, vignettes) and will identify to what extent the learning experience was enhanced through a cross-curricular approach. Where the approach was less successful there may be a critique of the planning approach used and suggestions for further enhancement of children’s learning. o This section may also include specific examples of work undertaken in school where appropriate, for example out of school work such as homework, school outings, use of the school grounds, links to children’s home experiences and visiting speakers. o A conclusion which summarises the challenges for schools in promoting effective cross-curricular planning and teaching. o A bibliography o An appendix which includes: lesson plans and evaluations for a minimum of 5 lessons, linked via a theme or topic, which were taught on placement; examples of children’s learning where appropriate (see above).
