MARKING SCHEME The question is quite straightforward, and requires two associated issues to be addressed: to compare and contrast the concepts of group and team; to critically evaluate prescriptions for the development of effective teams. An appropriate distribution of marks for these two issues would be 40:60. For the first issue, I will be prepared to fail students who do not draw a satisfactory distinction between team and group. Bare pass answers will simply point out that all teams are (formal) groups, but not all groups are teams. Good answers will draw attention (with evidence) to some of the characteristics necessary for the difference between teams and groups. In terms of the second issue, there are different prescriptions for group development (e.g. Belbin). If other prescriptions are used in addition or instead of Belbin, credit would be given so long as the answer gives a critical evaluation. Bare pass answers will simply regurgitate Belbin’s argument about complementary roles. Better/good answers will explore the roles in greater detail to show how complementary roles can support the effective performance of a group
