In “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love,” Terri argues that despite Ed’s violent behavior he loved her/ She says to Mel, “But he loved me. In his own way maybe but he loved me. There was love there, Mel. Don’t say there wasn’t” (328). Do you agree with Terri that “there was love there”? For this essay, do not include examples from your own life to support your thesis, and do dot do any research. Draw evidence from the story only. In the opening paragraph, include a these that directly answers the question, and please don’t nullify the topic by saying that love is in the eye of the beholder or, as Laura suggests, that no one can judge another’s situation. This topic requires that you make judgments or determinations and argue them. Body paragraphs should offer clear-out topic sentences-reasons who you believe what you claim in the thesis to be true. These reasons come from you and are subjective- your opinion. Draw evidence from the story to support your topic sentences. (Cite the page number, and identify the speaker of all quotes and paraphrases.) Then, analyze your evidence0 explain how the evidence supports your topic sentence. Also, for any one reason your argue, introduce an opposing argument and refute it. To determine how the opposition might respond to your reasons why, I recommend that you chart your thesis. Write in the present tense unless a character refers to a past event, one that began before the start of the story. Terri’s references to Ed, for example, would qualify as action that occurred before the start of the story.
