First,I will give you a brief background of the presentations i attended: presentation 1, title:English as a Foreign Alphabet:Helping Arabic speaking learners. The presenter offered Arabic/ESL instructors insights into the noted difficulties low-level Arabic -speaking ESL learners often demonstrate with the conventions of Arabic.he spent years of Arabic/Efl experience in the midwest,analysis of Arabic learner writing errors.(this is a brief background on the presentation) He began his presentation by explaining the nature of the Arabic language,for example, Arabic has 28 letters always written in cursive,and unlike English has no print form.Arabic has also a number of symbols,which are used,which are not letters.only eight letters of arabic alphabet has clear equivalent in roman letters:F,L,M,K,R,B,N,Z. He stated that in order to teach English to Arab speakers,we must put into consideration the following, 1-block letters vs.cursive 2-emphasize the importance of vowel letters to the system 3-illustrate/begin with the 5 short vowels(does not exist in the arabic language) -show meaning contrast (bat,bet,bit,bot) 4multisyllabic words,segmentation open/closed,affix/root recognition(ends in a consonant-closed),ends in a vowel-open) 5-emphasizing spelling precision.since every letter counts instructors could use the old fashioned spelling quiz.exercising copying words /sentences. 6-use spelling writing placement tests as part of regular placement decision. presentation 2: tiltle:Oral language and word walls In this presentation words in spanish were put up and after presenting several activities we were able to read/act the actual words given. The aim of this chart of words is to: 1-interaction 2-frequency 3-productive 4-teach content and function words 4-useful for diffrent age groups 5-the strategy used could be helpful in teaching any language After attending this particular presentation, I recognized the importance of ''REPETITION & amp;quot; ,in other words ,we were able to learn a target language without actually learning the alphabet.we pronounced/understood words through physical activities.(acting the words given in the chart). Third presentation, -the presentation seeks to demystify the connections between (l1 and l2) and( c1 and c2) -the focus was on chineese heritage language classrooms.what the presenters discovered about language -culture-identity connections has implications for all language teachers. -the questions posted in the presentation, what is culture learning?how do teachers balance linguistic and cultural instruction? -the findings of their research, teachers tend to use target language in teaching culture -the textbooks already represent a target language the suggestions for teachers of diverse languages/cultures were the following, 1-bring students culture into the classroom 2-instead of teaching culture with students lean it with them. 3-use l1 and l2 for instructional tools for language and culture 4- collaborate with teachers of other subjects/languages. 5-help students explore their own identities (Attending these presentations helped me in many ways, 1-as a future teacher in a foreign language,i learned new strategies to get my students get involved in the classroom.further,the importance of learning other cultures and respecting others as well.
