• Research a particular human genetic disorder; • Assume role(s) of doctor, genetic counselor, parents, sibling(s), affected individual (as the case requires); • Make informed decision(s) based on consideration of the bioethical issues involved. Procedure: Use the following scenarios from below and write a complete report (a minimum of 900 words) about the issue. Include the following four different areas in the report. After looking at all viewpoints, decide what you think is best for the scenario. (We are providing you with a starting point to use when taking a particular viewpoint. These may then lead you to more questions.) • Doctor’s viewpoint – include what the disease is, the cause, and the cure, etc. • Genetic counselor’s viewpoint– why did this happen, will it happen again, what can be done, etc. • Parent’s effects – financially, emotionally, socially, etc. • Community resources available – are there any. • Insurance viewpoint – lifetime coverage, medicine benefits, preexisting conditions, etc. Scenario: You and your partner are both African American. You have two children: the second child, a girl, is an albino; the first child, also a girl, is visually impaired. You would like another child and seek the advice of a genetic counselor.
