You’re assignment is to very briefly: (1) identify the salient features of the President''s proposal (2) identify who the opponents are and what outline their arguments (make sure you focus not only on the Republicans, but on disagreements within the Democratic Party. (3) trace previous attempts to reform health care in the United States, starting with the Truman Administration. This is to be a brief paper, so you must develop a way of saying what needs to be said in the fewest number of words. You may use information from the video and textbook (in fact, I would start with the relevant section of the text), but you are expected to examine and use outside sources as well. Part of your grade will be based on the extent to which you have used other materials. (At the same time, keep in mind that this is not a Ph.D. dissertation). Also you must cite the sources of your information in footnotes, either at the bottom of the relevant pages of the paper or on a separate page at the end of your paper. I do not require any particular style of footnoting, only that you are consistent throughout the paper and that you provide enough information to allow the reader to locate the sources that you used. Keep in mind that footnotes are not the same as bibliographies (or a "list of works consulted", as a bibliography is sometimes called). If you are still confused, talk to a librarian. You must include both footnotes and a bibliography. The bibliography should include only those sources that you have used in your footnotes. Be careful of your sources. There is a lot of very good information on the internet, but a lot of rubbish also. NOTE: Neither Wikepedia nor any other encyclopedia is acceptable as a cited source. If you use website sources, don''t just cite the address; indicate the name of the website also The paper must be written in college level English so carefully proofread your paper. Points will be deducted for shoddy work. I expect you to use your own words in this paper. If you use the words or ideas of another author, you must clearly indicate that in the text.
