When you''ve read through these articles and reviewed the Background Materials and any other materials that you find useful as needed, please compose a short (ca. 5-7 page) paper on the topic: "Is the success of the newer ''agile methodologies'' dependent on the use of certain systems design tools? If so, what are they, and why? If not, why not? Can tools really be discussed separately from methods?" In preparing your paper, you may wish to think about such issues as: • What are the different kinds of systems design tools? Where did they come from? Who created them, and why? Where did the term "CASE tools" come from? • What makes "object-oriented design" so central to current systems development methods? How did it become so dominant an approach? • "Entity-relationship diagrams" have been around a long time. Has their structure and use changed in the context of "agile methodologies"? • Are there notable differences in approach within the "agile" camp? Do any of these approaches seem notably better to you than others, on the basis of what you can tell at this relatively early stage of your acquaintance with the systems design literature? • Is it better to use tools and approaches that have been around a good amount of time and whose limitations are well known, or to use new tools and approaches where the results are less predictable?
