This is the objective of this assignment: to evaluate sociologically something in your life, which may include current events, happenings, or relevant public persons. This assignment, however, is not just about personal reflection; you will need to examine some public issue that affects your private life. I hope that in outlying these directions you will 1) decide to choose some topic that is truly meaningful to you and 2) begin to understand how to sociologically analyze your life and surroundings. To begin, choose some topic of consideration. For example, you might want to address a local political or environmental issue; national issues can be addressed if you demonstrate how they affect you locally (either here or in your home town). There are a lot of issues around the University that are worthy of analysis. I encourage you to write about something in your current community. Here are a few questions such as these to guide your analysis: • Is this a public issue that affects me privately? Or is it just a private issue? • If this is a public/private issue, is the connection clear? Or is it invisible? • If there are conflicts involved, what are the power relations at hand? Who has it? Who doesn’t? How is this affecting the issue? These are only a few questions you should ask. They are meant to get you started, not to be the only questions you ask! Grading Criteria for Essay I will grade your essays on the following criteria. The internet and Wikipedia do not count; the library is full of great references. Analysis: 40 points • obvious use of the sociological imagination • obvious use of sociological mindfulness (seeing invisible connections) • use of sociological theories or concepts to make sense of issue. • goes beyond the obvious or what I have already covered. 2 Writing: 20 points. • -1 point per spelling error. • -1 point per grammar error. • -5 point per reference error minimum; plagiarism will result in a zero and possible additional sanctions. • -10 points if no bibliography is included no bibliography • This is the appropriate citation format for this essay.
