Your task in this assignment is to use the current research literature to design a better questionnaire than is available in the popular literature. STEP 1: Find an informal magazine or web-based survey about some aspect of personality. TURN THIS IN WITH YOUR ASSIGNMENT STEP 2: Find research on this topic in the empirical research literature (i.e. http://www.apa.org/psycinfo/ ) and use it to evaluate the merits of the survey you found. STEP 3: Write a paper (following the guidelines below) in which you discuss your informal measure and design a new one. Sections of your paper In your paper, you will need to have 3 broad sections. Following is a description of each section and a list of questions to get you started. Bear in mind that these questions may not be the only ones you need to answer with your paper. Introduction An introduction includes an explanation of the past research that has been done in this area and introduces the reader to your specific topic and hypotheses. This section should be a minimum of 2 pages, and a maximum of 4 pages. Questions that you should think about in this section include: • Discuss the informal survey you found, what it’s supposed to be measuring, and what the score ranges are • What has past research shown to be true regarding the construct measured by this survey? Are there any empirically validated surveys already out there? In order to do this, you will need to summarize the studies you read in preparation for this paper. Be sure to use proper citation. • Have the findings been consistent with one another, or have there been discrepancies between studies? • What does the research suggest about whether the measure you found is a good way to measure this particular personality structure? • What are the weaknesses of the informal survey, both statistically & amp; theoretically? New Measure Development This section gives a detailed explanation of the issues related to the reliability and validity of your informal measure & amp; discusses how to design a new one that is higher in these qualities. It should be a minimum of 1.5 pages and a maximum of 3 pages. Questions to answer in this section include: • What items on your informal measure are empirically-supported as being related to the construct of interest? Which ones are not related? Given this, which ones are you keeping and which ones will you discard as you design your new one? Give a list of 5-10 items that you think should appear on your version of the measure • What type of reliability will be most important for this measure? Why? How will you test for it? • What type of validity will be most important? Why? How will you test for it? Discussion In your discussion, you should wrap up the paper. This section should be a minimum of 1 page and a maximum of 2 pages. Questions for this section include: • Is it important to have an empirically-supported measure of this construct? Why? • Are there any dangers or drawbacks to the informal survey being available? Would these be made better or worse by creating a better survey? Style Your paper should be typewritten in APA style. The APA style manual is available in a number of libraries around campus. I also have a copy in my office that you are welcome to look at. Rules, Rules, Rules • You must use at least 5 outside sources, other than your book. Of these, at least 4 must be empirical sources (research literature), rather than popular media (e.g., the internet, magazines, newspapers) – the informal survey itself does not count as a source • At least 3 of the research sources you use must be recently published, that is, within the last 2 years. • You will need a reference page with all these sources properly cited in APA style. • On the reference page, with each reference please provide an annotation, in which you use a few sentences to discuss the relevance of each source to your work and how helpful you found it and why. You may not simply copy abstracts from articles, as these sentences must be in your own voice and words.
