LAW OF CONTRACT ASSESSED COURSEWORK 2008-2009 The Doddington Race Circuit is due to host the British Grand Prix motor race on 1st May 2009. The event is due to be broadcast on a national television channel. In order to ensure that the circuit is in the best condition possible for the race the owner of the circuit, Bernie Ecclescake, enters into a contract with Mac Ltd who agree to resurface the track. The total contract price is £50,000 and Mac Ltd agree to complete the work by 15th April 2008. Bernie also enters into a contract with Events Ltd, a company who specialises in providing corporate hospitality. Events Ltd agrees to book all of the VIP boxes for the race as they provide the best view of the race track. The contract price is £20,000. As the race date approaches Mac Ltd realsise that they will not be able to complete the work on time. They approach Bernie and ask for an additional £5,000 so that extra workmen can be hired to complete the work. To avoid the embarrassment of negative television publicity that such a delay would cause Bernie reluctantly agrees to the extra payment. On hearing that the work may be delayed Events Ltd also promise Mac Ltd an additional £5,000 to avoid having to disappoint a number of their high profile VIP clients should the race be cancelled. Bernie also approaches Tony, a local retired race steward and asks Tony whether he would volunteer his services over the race weekend. Tony agrees to steward the race. The resurfacing is finished on time and the race takes place as planned. After the race Bernie promises to pay Tony £50 for the excellent service Tony had provided over the weekend. However, a few weeks have passed since the race and Bernie is now refusing to pay Mac Ltd the extra £5,000 promised. Events Ltd also refuse to pay the extra amount as they feel that the race was not as exciting as they had anticipated. Finally, when Tony asks Bernie for his £50, Bernie refuses to pay saying that the excitement of watching the race should have been enough.
