The world we live in is a soup of media/mediated images. Over the next month closely observe your surroundings, read the DO, Syracuse Record, New York Times, watch TV, look out for advertisements, reports and descriptions. From these diverse sources, write down and keep records of what you perceive as racially stereotypical images, racially neutral and racially positive/negative images. While we are at it, please think about and look out for gender biases in the media. Once we read Patricia Hill Collins, you will be able to use her theory of the Interlocking Nature of Oppression. Therefore, using her perspective and other analytical tools, show us how are women represented and whether there are differences that you can see between how women of color are represented vs European American women? What messages are being sent with regards to body type, for example. Be as creative as you can. What shows depict minority characters and how are they portrayed? To what degree do the make-believe characters reflect real-life? Do their roles encourage color-blind ideology or do they perpetuate negative race stereotypes?
